Become a youth observer

You can now stand for the role of youth observer on one of Ungdomsøen's two boards – Fonden Ungdomsøen and Middelgrundsfonden. It is an important role that gives you influence on what kind of place Ungdomsøen should be for more young people.

You will be introduced to the work of sitting on a board that helps shape and set the direction for Ungdomsøen. You will gain experience in developing an organisation and making sure we always create value for young people. You will also gain a strong network among the other board members, who bring professional weight and experience from many industries.

We are looking for you who see the value in a platform like Ungdomsøen, which supports young people in becoming part of a community where they can experiment and create the projects and events they dream of. All young people aged 15 to 30 can stand, and you don't need any experience – we will make sure you are well prepared for the role.

Read more and apply using the form on this page. The application deadline is Sunday 9 August 2026.

To ungeobservatører er valgt

We are proud to announce that two people have been elected as youth observers on our two boards, Fonden Ungdomsøen and Middelgrundsfonden.

Magnus Strange Herrmann has been elected as youth observer on the board of Fonden Ungdomsøen. Magnus is an upper secondary school student, a speaker and former chair of Danske Skoleelever.

Caroline Schack-Nielsen has been re-elected as youth observer on the board of Middelgrundsfonden. This is her second term in the role. Caroline is a student, has previously lived at Ungdomsøen and has volunteered as a Give-A-Year volunteer.

Together with the rest of the board members, they will help set the direction for what kind of place Ungdomsøen should be. They hold the role for one year.

Thank you to all the candidates who stood for the roles. We greatly appreciate your initiative and your engagement in Ungdomsøen.

Få indflydelse på Ungdomsøen

Ungdomsøen is not just an island. We are a free space and meeting place for young people with the courage to create something new. Ungdomsøen lies a short boat trip from Copenhagen and has a history as an old military fort, but today it has been transformed into a platform for community, culture and engagement.

We are a laboratory where you can develop your idea, create projects and be part of a community. With us, young people take the lead and turn ideas into reality. We work to create space for learning, collaboration and encounters between people. Everyone is welcome at Ungdomsøen, where we welcome groups of friends, school classes, organisations and corporate guests on the quay.

The role of youth observer

As a youth observer you become part of one of our two boards – Fonden Ungdomsøen or Middelgrundsfonden – where you hold the role for one year. You will have influence on the decisions the board makes. These can concern the physical setting of Ungdomsøen and the projects and initiatives we create here.

You will gain insight into and experience of the work and decision-making processes of a board. You can contribute your perspectives and knowledge on an equal footing with the board members. Your voice will be heard, but you do not have a vote. This has been decided to ensure that you are not legally or financially liable for the decisions the board makes.

You will take part in four board meetings a year, the first of which is on 5 October 2026. You don't need any experience – you just need the courage and the desire to have a seat at the table where we make decisions about the future of Ungdomsøen.

We expect you to visit Ungdomsøen and get to know our vision and dogmas. Before the board work begins, there will be a one-day course at the end of September where you learn about board work and get prepared for the role.

Who can stand?

You can stand if you:

  • are between 15 and 30 years old
  • are not employed or paid by the hour at Ungdomsøen
  • have the courage and desire to get involved and share your ideas and perspectives on the development of Ungdomsøen. We will guide you, prepare you for the role and promise you a safe learning space where you can gain new experience.

The two boards

We have two boards that carry out different tasks to develop and shape Ungdomsøen.

Fonden Ungdomsøen is responsible for the operation and activities of Ungdomsøen. It is the board's task to make sure that, in particular, the financial and legal framework for Ungdomsøen is in place. The board has insight into projects and events for young people at Ungdomsøen, but it does not regulate what can and cannot be created here. It is the engaged young people and the community who together create the initiatives on the platform.

Middelgrundsfonden is the legal owner of Ungdomsøen and is responsible for developing the physical setting of the historic sea fort. This foundation is also currently leading a major construction project that will future-proof the fort and create even better conditions for projects and events at Ungdomsøen. Middelgrundsfonden leases the fort to Fonden Ungdomsøen.
